Rain can reduce visibility and tire grip. Your safest response is to create more time and space around the vehicle.
Adjust early
- Reduce speed gradually to suit visibility and road conditions.
- Increase following distance.
- Turn on the appropriate vehicle lights and use wipers as needed.
- Keep windows clear and avoid driving when you cannot see safely.
Use smooth controls
Brake, accelerate and steer progressively. Sudden inputs can reduce stability, especially where water, slush, leaves or other surface hazards are present.
Watch for hidden risks
Look for standing water, spray from large vehicles, pedestrians with limited visibility and drivers who may stop suddenly. When conditions become unsafe, choose a safe place to wait for improvement.
