Managing Nerves Before a Driving Lesson or Test

Reduce uncertainty with structured practice, a calm pre-drive routine and realistic goals for each lesson or test.

Managing Nerves Before a Driving Lesson or Test

Feeling nervous before a lesson or road test is common. The goal is not to eliminate every nervous feeling; it is to keep your routine organized enough that you can make safe decisions.

Prepare the controllable details

  • Sleep adequately and allow enough travel time.
  • Bring the required licence and appointment information.
  • Practise the skills that are currently inconsistent instead of repeatedly driving without a goal.
  • Ask the instructor to explain the purpose of each exercise.

Use a simple pre-drive routine

Adjust the seat and mirrors, secure the seatbelt, identify the controls and take a few slow breaths before moving. Start with familiar roads when appropriate and increase difficulty progressively.

Reset after a mistake

A single mistake does not require panic. Maintain control, observe the road, follow the law and continue safely. During lessons, ask for specific feedback that you can apply on the next attempt.

This article provides general educational guidance. Persistent or severe anxiety that interferes with daily activities should be discussed with an appropriate health professional.
