How to Practise Parking Safely

Choose a legal, low-pressure practice area and prioritize observation, slow control and repeatable reference points.

How to Practise Parking Safely

Parking improves through slow, deliberate repetition. Begin in a quiet and legal practice area where you can work without obstructing traffic or creating risk.

Set up the practice area

  • Use clearly marked spaces or safe movable markers.
  • Check for pedestrians, cyclists, curbs, posts and nearby vehicles.
  • Keep your speed at a controlled crawl.
  • Use mirrors, blind-spot checks and full observation before reversing.

Practise one skill at a time

Work separately on forward parking, reverse parking, parallel parking and roadside stops. Repeat the same starting position so you can understand how steering input changes the vehicle path.

Correct safely

If the vehicle is not positioned properly, stop, secure the vehicle, reassess and correct. A safe adjustment is better than forcing a poor approach.

Review parking along roadways in the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook.
