Highway merging requires observation, speed control and a clear decision. The entrance ramp and acceleration lane give you time to assess traffic and build an appropriate speed.
Before entering the freeway
- Look ahead at the ramp shape and traffic flow.
- Check mirrors and the blind spot on the merging side.
- Identify a safe gap rather than focusing on only one vehicle.
- Use a clear signal.
Use the acceleration lane
Accelerate smoothly so your speed is reasonably compatible with freeway traffic, when traffic and road conditions permit. Avoid stopping in the acceleration lane unless congestion or an emergency makes it necessary.
Complete the merge
Keep checking the gap, steer smoothly into the lane and cancel the signal. Establish a safe following distance and continue scanning well ahead.
